Welcome to HantsLUG!

…the Hampshire Linux User Group.

This is a new version of the website, with many links to the old wiki.  Please contact the webmaster with any comments, ideas, or new content.

We aim to encourage and support the use of Linux and other free operating systems.

You don't need to live or work in Hampshire to join-in: in fact about half of our members are from outside Hampshire.

The mailing list is where most of the activity happens.  In fact, membership of HantsLUG is defined as being registed with the mailing list, so that is where you should start.

Please register to add your own posts, comments, etc. to this site.  (Yes, that means separate registrations for the mailing list and this site — sorry about that.)

There will hopefully be two talks:

  • High Performance Computing – Building a cluster – Tim Brocklehurst

6 April 2013

For our April meeting, we are privileged to be hosted at IBM Hursley. For those who haven't been before it's a great opportunity.  Note that the start time is yet to be decided — watch this space and/or the mailing list for more information.

The plan is to hold the Easter debate at this meeting, but we need some speakers. The topic is (broadly) "The Future of Linux". The exact topics covered are at the discretion of the speakers, but there's plenty to go at, from mobile-space to server-space, SystemD to the Desktop.

Improving your home broadband

My day job is a network engineer for an ISP. We actually specialise in high speed low latency fibre connectivity but we do provide all the usual ISP services such as broadband (DSL), hosting, voice, and so on.

People regularly ask me about how they can improve their broadband or steps they can take to ensure they are getting the best they can from their service providers connection (which essentially entails how it works).

I wouldn't touch too much on how it works as that can get very technical but there are lots of strait forward steps [continued...]

VoIP and Telephony

I work for a VoIP and telephony provider, so I can talk about what is VoIP, how does it work, why would you want it, and a beginners guide to making and reciving calls over VoIP.

Some of these questions could cover topics such as;

  • Financial benefit to VoiP (for both domestic and business)
  • VoIP client recommendation such as land line/desk phones, wireless/DECT phones, softclients for PCs and mobile clients (smartphone apps)
  • VoIP provider recommendations
  • Common VoIP issues and a resolutions (SIP AGL, NAT, STUN, IPSEC)

A Beginner’s Guide to IPv6

I've been toying with the idea of doing a talk on IPv6, which is something I've been playing with although I'm certainly no expert.

Hence the title, which indicates that it would be a talk by a beginner, not for one.

If there's any interest, I'll try to get my thoughts together.

Please add comments here, or email me at cgdennis@btinternet.com if you would be interested.

cheers

Chris
