How do I become a member of [[HantsLUG]]?

It's easy. Just sign up to the MailingList. That's where the majority of our discussion takes place – the heart of the LUG. It's where you can ask questions about Linux or computing in general. Other members will then post replies and try and solve your problem. It's free to join the MailingList – you just subscribe your e-mail address.

And that's it? I'm a member?

Yes. After being subscribed to the MailingList for 28 days, you are considered a member of the LUG. That period is only for offical things like voting in the Elections. You can still take part in all the other LUG activities before the 28 days. You don't even have to send any e-mails to the MailingList during that time period, although we do like to welcome new members to the list!

Do I have to become a member?

No, you're welcome to attend meetings and use the IRC channel without being a member. You can use the MailingList too, but just by being on it you become a member automatically! We welcome non-members and guests to our meetings.

Do I have to live in Hampshire to join?

No, we have members all over the world. Well, certainly lots of different places in the UK, and several abroad. Check them out at the Frappr map.

What next?

The LUG holds meetings once a month. These are announced on the front page of this website and on the mailing list. Member and non-members alike are welcome to attend. You can read about past meetings and see photos on the MeetingRecords page. Our meetings are relaxed and a good chance to sit and chat with other Linux users.

You might also want to join the IrcChannel. IRC is a real-time chat system, like instant messaging, but where anyone can see and participate in the conversation. There are usually a dozen or so members chatting on our IrcChannel and members and non-members alike are welcome to join. You can read the IRC Howto to get started, in particular the few commands you'll need.

You can also read the latest blog posts from members on Planet [[HantsLUG]]. If you have a blog with an RSS feed, you can have it added to the Planet. Just contact the appropriate PeopleToKnowAbout. You could also link to us from your website

You can also purchase some LUGMerchandise. There are mouse mats, mugs, stickers and key fobs available. You can also stick your virtual pin on our Frappr Map. This site uses AJAX and Google maps to show us where in the world HantsLUG members are. Join those already on it and let us know where you come from!

How else can I get involved?

Your LUG needs you! Everything is not already sorted! The LUG is run entirely by volunteers and desperately needs people to help out. You do not have to be a Linux guru to be help out! You can:

Getting involved in a LUG activity is a good way to see if you'd like to stand for the Committee.

The LUG runs InfoPoints at computer fairs in Hampshire, where we talk to people about Linux and Free Software. We also distribute CDs with Linux and Free Software on. We are always looking for more people to help out at the stands, or even co-ordinate and run them. There's one key requirement - you must be friendly and approachable! You don't have to know a lot about the technicalities of Linux, although some familiarity with desktop systems running Linux is necessary. There's lots of information about past InfoPoints and ones that are being planned on the InfoPoints page.

Last but not least, spread the word! Tell people about us and what we do. Show them the website or bring them along to a meeting.

I love this LUG! I want to do more!

You can donate to the LUG via Nochex. You can even specify which aspect of the LUG's activites you wish your donation to go towards if you wish.

If you're interested in getting involved in the running of the LUG, you can stand for election for the Committee. You can read more about the positions on the Committee and the responsibilities they involve on the LUGConstitution page. Elections are held at the AGM every year.

Ack, I'm stuck. What do I do?

If you have a specific problem with an aspect of HantsLUG, see PeopleToKnowAbout as this will usually list the people in charge of the main aspects of the LUG. Any general enquiries can be made to the MailingList or to the Chairman.
