Thanks, all, for the prompt and comprehensive responses.
I've been told sometimes that I must or must not use certain software to
access specific websites, but experiment has always shown that it's untrue.
(Ignorance, laziness, whatever.)
If my informant is correct, this is the first instance I have encountered
where a site has actually been crippled in this way.
