The 7720G is large enough to have a separate numeric keypad so it's not that. I think it all boils down to the password getting corrupted(?) by the dodgy BIOS.

Check you haven't got Numlock on. My Thinkpad does odd things when
brought back from a sleep, and setting numlock on is one of them, and
has caused me to panic a few times...
