..and what if they lost (or caved), and decided to spend that money on
licensing FAT instead?

As I understand it Microsoft charge something like $0.25 per device up
to a maximum of $250K per company to license FAT.

Of course that doesn't even cover the GPS patents that Microsoft have,
but the FAT patents are the one us Linux geeks are most interested in
I suspect.
